Panos Cosmatos' Nekrokosm produced by A24

Panos Cosmatos’ return to cosmic horror, Nekrokosm, set for 2023 production

Following his recent participation in Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities (2022), Panos Cosmatos will return to his body horror odysseys with Nekrokosm. Produced by A24, the film is planned for production in 2023. The date of the release is not fixed yet.

With only two feature films in his dossier, Panos Cosmatos has already left a mark in the alley of genre filmmaking. Both Beyond The Black Rainbow (2010) and Mandy (2018) were grisly trips, impeccably designed and made to scare the living s*** out of us all.

In 2022, the director returned for an hour-long episode in Netflix’s Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities (2022). His episode entitled The Viewing followed a motley pot of accomplished guests invited to the spectacular house for one memorable evening. Cosmatos might have overdone with dialogue, but once the horror engine roars, it’s on a roll, baby.

Earlier this year, A24 announced that the studio will produce Nekrokosm, Cosmatos’ third feature, further expanding the ever-growing list of bonafide mind-blowers in the stables of A24. The director has kept any details to himself for now. The only information we have is “Nekrokosm is set deep within a strange galaxy where two lovers are torn apart as they try to survive a malevolent invasion.

Such a premise does sound familiar. In Mandy (2018), a dark fantasy tale with the most outstanding horror cinematography in years, Nicolas Cage was a force to be reckoned with, fueled by vengeance and fighting equally malevolent beings and cultists.

What else can we expect then? Judging from his previous projects, Panos Cosmatos will surely deliver stunning visuals, with striking color palettes and grainy texture that imbues his films with a surprisingly nostalgic spirit.
