Old Man Cartoon Movie (2020) Will Be A Must-See For Stop Motion Fans

Estonian animated horror flick Old Man Cartoon Movie (2020) will premiere this year at Haapsalu Horror and Fantasy Film Festival.

Despite the coronavirus pandemic, some film festivals still take place… online. That’s the case of Haapsalu Horror and Fantasy Film Festival, which every year celebrates the bizarre, the scary and the bloody of cinema.

In the lineup of the festival, one particular film caught Cultural Hater’s attention. An Estonian stop motion flick called Old Man Cartoon Movie (2020), directed by duo Mikk Mägi and Oskar Lehemaa.

What is Old Man Cartoon Movie (2020) about?

The feature film is an expanded idea of Mägi and Lehemaa’s short. Old Man Cartoon Movie (2020) follows a farmer, whose precious cow disappears. The cow can pose a grave danger – when not milked, it can explode. In order to find the animal that guarantees his wellbeing, the farmer teams up with a character named Old Man – an eccentric grumbler whose innocent appearance can be quite misleading.

The short movie about Old Man was well received in Estonia back in 2017. Cinema goers loved the character of Old Man, and – according to its creators – wanted more. As Mägi and Lehemaa explain;

Fast-forward through two years of manic writing and storyboarding and voice acting and a million other things… Old Man Cartoon Movie is a stop-motion animation, and I think this insane character could not properly exist in any other form.

Judging from the trailer, the visual design of the Estonian animated horror draws plenty from Wallace & Gromit movies. I also got a vibe of Pat & Mat (1976), the for-kids comedy series from Czechoslovakia. The film promises to bring a vivid mix of gore and comedy, all with the iconic character of Old Man spraying havoc.
